Forever 21 founder - Net worth: $5 billion

Forever 21 founder Do Won Chang worked as a janitor, gas station attendant, and in a coffee shop when he first moved to America.

Net worth: $5 billion (as of Sept. 2013)

The husband-and-wife team — Do Won Chang and Jin Sook — behind Forever 21 didn't always have it so easy. After moving to America from Korea in 1981, Do Won had to work three jobs at the same time to make ends meet. They opened their first clothing store in 1984.

    Little fashion designer: Cecilia Cassini

If anybody knows Cecilia, they know she has had a passion for fashion since she was a baby.

Since Cecilia received her first sewing machine from her grandmother for her sixth birthday, she has not stopped sewing and creating her designs. Today, at ten years old Cecilia, is “the youngest fashion designer in the country - and maybe even in the world.”

Over the past four years, Cecilia has taken a few sewing lessons here and there; but, mostly, she has learned by breaking a lot of needles on her machine and ripping out a lot of crooked stitches.

“What you see with Cecilia Cassini is Brilliant Kiddie Couture. When you look at what she makes, it’s obvious she’s designing the clothes that every little girl dreams of wearing.” At her first Trunk Show, Cecilia sold almost 50 pieces in three hours to impressed and eager young girls. “In the coming days and years, more and more kids will be wearing Cecilia Cassini designs.”

Besides being “crazy talented,” she exudes “highbrow fashion and couture mentality.” She loves to experiment with lots of different colors and patterns to create “one-of-a-kind masterpieces.” Cecilia refers to her creations as “masterpieces” because “each dress is unique and one-of-a-kind just like the Mona Lisa and Chanel’s chains.”

Unlike Da Vinci or Coco, Cecilia insists that she does not want to wait until she is an adult to create masterpieces and to begin making a difference. And, why should she? Of course, school is a priority; but, Cecilia still has plenty of time to design and sew.

Cecilia gets her inspiration from lots of people and places like fashion magazines; but, mostly, she listens to her heart and follows her imagination. Cecilia has already, at just ten years old, learned that with enough passion and commitment, anything is possible. Cecilia hopes to inspire all children to believe in themselves and to follow their dreams.

Cecilia was lucky to be discovered and taken seriously by some journalists whom have given her incredible exposure. Cecilia has been featured on several television and newspapers across the United States. CBS news and the front page of the Los Angeles Daily News are just two of many.

“It sounds like she is a prodigy. It’s just not normal to hear of a ten year-old with that kind of passion for fashion design,” says Mary Stephens, Director of Fashion Design at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. Because of the attention, Cecilia has already had the opportunity to actually begin to inspire children. Numerous children have contacted Cecilia to say that because of her story, they are encouraged and inspired: One child said, “just because we are children does not mean we should not or are not able to follow our passions and turn our dreams into realities.”

Most recently, Cecilia has been asked by elementary school teachers to talk to their classrooms to demonstrate that indeed anything is possible. One teacher wrote, “My students loved hearing your story, and I know that it will make a difference for them. They saw that someone their age can do big things when they work hard at something they love. It was especially good for them to see that while you are running a business, you are also taking time to give back to those who have less.”

Cecilia is lucky enough to have a sewing machine and parents who let her cut up fabric to create new fashions and cultivate her talents. “If Cecilia is a child with incredible talent, she is also a kid with a big conscience.” More and more, Cecilia wants to help to make a difference by giving back to charity to help children or anybody to be able to follow their dreams. For example, Cecilia was so moved by the story of a young woman who received a full scholarship to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles, but who was homeless and did not have a sewing machine to practice on, Cecilia gave her her own.

We hope that this gives you better insight to Cecilia and her story.

However, the designers mentioned above have managed to repair the country’s bad reputation regarding its fashion industry. Even if you may not have heard of these names, soon you may be wearing some of their brand clothes. From now on, when you are shopping at the mall, be sure to look for some of these names. It is worth it, or so do fashion critics claim.

Chinese Fashion Label "Exception de Mixmind" Looks Abroad

    December 2, 2013

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan, wearing a custom Exception de Design trench coat, as departed a plane outside Moscow in March.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images
China’s first lady could do for a Chinese brand what Michelle Obama did for Taiwan-born designer Jason Wu.
Exception de Mixmind, which garnered international attention this spring after China’s first lady Peng Liyuan dazzled audiences in a trench coat custom-made by the label during a state visit to Moscow, is setting its sights on using some of that momentum to expand outside its home market.
Mao Jihong, co-founder and president of Exception de Mixmind, told China Real Time at a recent fashion event in Beijing that the company, which has more than 90 stores in China, is preparing to expand in Europe and studying how to enter the U.S.. A company spokeswoman declined to disclose sales figures, but said the brand has seen a “satisfactory” increase this year.
Mr. Mao founded the Guangzhou-based clothing brand in 1996 with his ex-wife, Ma Ke, who remains the company’s art director. The two are among the first generation of designers in mainland China who studied clothing design in college.
“We target clients, domestic and international alike, who appreciate Eastern beauty and have an independent mindset,” said Mr. Mao, who is originally from central China’s Hunan province.
China’s first lady isn’t the only public figure to spotlight the brand. A photograph of Chinese tennis star Li Na dressed in a white Exception shirt beside the Eiffel Tower holding her French Open trophy also drew the public’s attention in 2011.
Exception’s design is known for being simple yet elegant, with designs that incorporate traditional Chinese aesthetics using natural fabrics. “We care a lot about artistic conception in our design,” Mr. Mao said. “The core value of oriental aesthetics is the theory of unity of man and nature.”
Mr. Mao, who eschews advertising campaigns and prefers to promote the brand “quietly,” also points to modern culture as a major source of inspiration, citing as examples novels by Haruki Murakami and films by Jia Zhangke, Steven Spielberg and Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
“Independence is a display of inner power and it is what helps my brand stand out from others,” he said. “Instead of being overwhelmed by what you wear, you should take charge of it.”
In addition to Exception, Mr. Mao also runs Ymoynot, a year-old fashion label targeted at young people with eight stores in mainland China and Hong Kong; and Fang Suo Commune, a chic bookstore opened in 2011 in Taikoo Hui, a high-end shopping mall in Guangzhou.
He said he hopes that as the brand expands overseas, it can help better represent China in the world of fashion.
“In the future, we hope that people around the world can enjoy oriental lifestyle and aesthetics,” he said. “We expect to stand in the same platform with first-tier fashion brands and retailers to deliver China’s voice.”

NOTE: The name of Mao Jihong’s fashion label is Exception de Mixmind. An earlier version of this post incorrectly referred to it in some instances as Exception de Mind.
